| 2006 DISCOVER MAGAZINE: "DOGS OF RAROTONGA" | ||||||||
EHF volunteer veterinarian and author, Dr. Cynthia Mills’, fascinating and thought provoking article, “Dogs of Rarotonga”, is the highlight of Discover Magazine’s June 04 edition. While working at the Esther Honey Clinic in the Cook Islands, Dr. Mills collected DNA samples from Esther Honey patients for the Canine Genome Project, a multinational collaboration similar to the Human Genome Project. The DNA sampling (twirling a cytology brush between the dog’s cheek and gum) and digital portraits of each subject collected for the genome project elicited island wide attention and a phone call that “revamped” the doctor’s world view. Dr. Mills’ subsequent research, according to Discover Magazine, “reveals that turning a wild animal into man’s best friend has surprising evolutionary side effects.” Photos by award winning Australian photographer, Trent Parke, capture the Doctor Suess-like appearance and spirit of the island’s short- legged canines. The Esther Honey Clinic, volunteers and EHF ‘Dog Crossing’ street signs (placed along Rarotonga’s main road by volunteers) are also included in Parke’s spectacular Raro layout. The Sydney-based photographer who traveled to the Cook Islands to shoot “Dogs of Rarotonga” expressed praise for the Esther Honey services and volunteers. “He was impressed with the veterinary medicine,” Discover editors noted. “The local animal clinic there was like a mini M*A*S*H unit,” he said. “The conditions were so sparse -- the doctor performed operations under a single light bulb, in very hot and humid conditions.” The “Dogs of Rarotonga” should not be missed by anyone with even a passing interest in dogs. Cynthia Mills, Veterinarian and Science Writer is the Author of: The Theory of Evolution: What it is, Where it came from and Why it works; and articles for The BARK, Discover, Health, Smithsonian,The Sciences and The Boston Globe. Dr. Mills' latest work, "Second Chance", appears in the Oct.-Dec. 2006 Conservation in Practice Dr. Mills can be reached at: millscy@easystreet.com | ||||||||
